Challenge Competition Prizes Awarded for Ideas on Advancing AHRQ's CDS Connect

Four prizes of $25,000 each were awarded to winning contestants in a challenge competition designed to solicit ideas on advancing the functionality, value and accessibility of AHRQ's CDS Connect platform. The goal of the challenge was to strengthen the ways in which industry, government and nonprofit entities can collaborate to share innovative CDS across health systems. The competition proceeded in two phases; Phase 1 called for design proposals, then selected Phase 1 submissions were invited to give live presentations in Phase 2. Prizes were awarded in four categories: Best Overall Design, Most Innovative, Best Technical Functionalities, and Best Value Proposition. In 2016, AHRQ launched a program of grants and contracts aimed at helping health care providers move patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) evidence into practice through clinical decision support (CDS). AHRQ advances the science of CDS by supporting implementers, clinicians, and technology vendors in developing CDS tools that are shareable, standards-based, publicly-available, and patient-centered. These components are detailed below.

Beyond these efforts, AHRQ continues to fund grants focused on advancing evidence into practice.  Grant funding is available for digital healthcare research and other priority areas, including clinical decision support. CDS Innovation Collaborative

The CDS Innovation Collaborative (CDSiC) will integrate diverse perspectives to produce resources and evidence to advance the field of patient-centered clinical decision support, making it more valuable and meaningful to patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems. Key domains for exploration include trust, interoperability, measurement/value, and partnership with patients. It will also include an innovation center and a research and development hub to facilitate real-world CDS measurement and testing.

CDS Connect

AHRQ leveraged the Health FFRDC, operated by the MITRE Corporation, to develop "CDS Connect," an online platform that includes a repository of CDS artifacts, an authoring tool to enable creation of CDS, and prototype tools for sharing and testing CDS. The Health FFRDC also hosts the monthly CDS Connect Work Group meeting.

CEDAR

AHRQ partnered with the Health FFRDC, operated by the MITRE Corporation, to support the dissemination of patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) through the CEDAR project. CEDAR is a standards-based application programming interface designed to to make PCOR evidence more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
