Purpose and Usage
Purpose

The purpose of this CDS is to encourage ED providers to provide educational materials regarding recognizing symptoms of venous thromboembolism in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism for which CTPA is ordered. Educational materials are to be provided in paper or via a website.

Intended Population

Patients with suspected pulmonary embolism for which CT pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) is ordered

Usage

The tool is embedded in the EHR, triggered by an order for CTPA.

Cautions

The CDS should only be used in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism for which CTPA is ordered. Educational materials are provided in paper form or via a website which may lead to inequitable access due to barriers in language, reading level, or computer access to the website.

Supporting Evidence
Source Description

A published study demonstrated that patients want to learn about the harm associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE) through a variety of methods, and most preferred to receive education in the context of a doctor-patient encounter. The next most common preference included paper educational materials.
